LEARNER-CENTERED DESIGN ASKS SCHOOL LEADERS TO CONSIDER A SIMPLE CONCEPT THAT IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED:
SOLVE THE PROBLEMS IN OUR SCHOOLS WITH THOSE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEMS.
The Asian Leadership Summit is the third of eight sessions for the Emerging Leaders Program for ESF schools. During this two-day hands-on workshop filled with practical tools and school-tested approaches, participants will become leaders of Learner-Centered Design, the design process that places the learner experience at the center of everything we do!
LCD transforms school leaders into project leaders who work with teams of learners in their school community to change the school experience. LCD is based on a simple yet oft-overlooked principle: solve the problems in our schools WITH those who are experiencing the problems. LCD transforms school leaders into project leaders who work with teams of learners in their school community to change the school experience. LCD is based on a simple yet oft-overlooked principle: solve the problems in our schools WITH those who are experiencing the problems. LCD Leaders and their teams create lasting changes to the learning experience (LX) using five phases:
- APPRECIATE: LCD Leaders and their team develop a true appreciation of the challenge AND those who are having it. Whether it is the design of a unit plan or a night of parent-teacher conferences, LCD teams think "WHO" before "DO".
- ILLUSTRATE: LCD Leaders flatten hierarchies and enable the expertise of their teams to illustrate a vision of the ideal learning experience (LX). During the illustrate phase, LCD teams ensure they "see it" rather than "solve it".
- IDEATE: LCD Leaders ignite the creative juices of their team through compelling questions that require divergent thoughts, lead to multiple options and potential solutions from both inside and outside of education. LCD teams ask "Who is the best in the world at this, and what can we learn from them?"
- ITERATE: LCD Leaders take the best designs from the ideate phase and test them...with those who will be using them every day. A new grading system? Test it with the teachers who will use it. A new school website for parents? Test it with the parents who will use it. LCD teams can't wait to "Get the prototype to the people" and aren't hungry for feedback, they are starving.
- PROLIFERATE: LCD teams get it out there! Once they have found a battle-tested solution that works, they make it happen and continuously think "seek and tweak" using feedback from the field. LCD Leaders and their teams measure their success on the LX, not on the finished product.
